Favourite Movies

I really like fantasy and period movies, but my favourite genre is horror. I especially like folk horror and horror set in remote places like space, the arctic, underwater, etc. These places are so vast and unforgiving that you don't really need anything supernatural to make them frightening.

Amadeus
Maybe my favourite non-horror movie. Not particularly historically accurate but I love it anyway.
Barton Fink
John Goodman is amazing.
Brazil
Dark comedy from Terry Gilliam set in a surreal dystopian future. Very cool aesthetic.
Eraser Head
This movie feels like a dream. Very relatable for me as someone with a fear of babies.
Event Horizon
Wonderful creepy sets. Lots of gore. Sam Neill.
Excalibur
Gorgeous dark fantasy. Contains this extremely heterosexual scene.
Fargo
Accurate depiction of life in Minnesota.
A Field in England
17th century guys do psychedelics. Beautiful cinematography and soundtrack.
In the Mouth of Madness
90s Lovecraftian horror starring Sam Neill, what's not to like?
I Saw the TV Glow
I have too much to say about this movie to fit it here.
Labyrinth
Puppets, gorgeous costumes, David Bowie's music.
The Last Unicorn
My favourite movie when I was a kid, I watched it hundreds of times. Great story and animation.
Legend
Very pretty. Tim Curry plays a sexy devil.
The Lord of the Rings
Every year I cook a big meal, enjoy some "pipeweed", and spend a day rewatching the whole trilogy.
The Love Witch
A modern movie that perfectly captures the aesthetic of 60s and 70s horror.
Marie Antoinette (2006)
This movie started my obsession with 18th-century fashion. Great soundtrack.
Mulholland Drive
Surreal and unsettling. I couldn't stop thinking about this movie for days after watching.
Nope
I first watched this on a plane surrounded by people, and it still completely terrified me.
Orlando
Very beautiful. I want to be Tilda Swinton.
The Princess Bride
Another movie I watched over and over as a kid.
Princess Mononoke
My favourite Studio Ghibli film. When I was little, I used to run around with a stick pretending I was San.
A Serious Man
I don't really know how to describe this movie or why I like it but it is very good.
Sleepy Hollow
A childhood favourite. It doesn't hold up perfectly but it's still very nostalgic for me. Beautiful costumes.
Suspiria
Incredible soundtrack and use of colour. I'm not a big Dario Argento fan, but I love this movie.
The Thing
Isolated arctic setting. Lots of gory practical effects. A perfect movie.
Viy
Very cool special effects. Natalya Varley's acting is really creepy.
The Wickerman
My favourite horror movie. The music is amazing. Christopher Lee is amazing.
The Witch
Creepy isolated rural setting. Goats. Great performance from Anya Taylor-Joy.
